Aka Mermaid Syndrome, it's an extremely rare lethal malformation which occurs when the legs of a new born are fused together. This occurs because of an alteration in vascular developpement during the third week of gestation causing the ausence of the distal brach of the abdominal aorta. Babies born with this malformation generally die after one or two days of life due to complications with their kidneys or bladder which also suffer malformations. This tends to occur in identical twins. In some cases, is possible to separate both legs so that the person has a quite normal life, but not always.
There are many types of Sirenomelia but I'm going to talk about the best known case, a girl called Siloh Pepin. When she was born, with both legs fused together, she didn´t have blodder, uterus, rectum or vagina. She only had 6 inches of large colon, a quarter of a kidney. She was expected to die within a few months and when she was only 3 months old her kidney failed and she had to be put on dyalisis. After this, when she was 2 she had a kidney transplant which lasted until she was 8 when she had her second transplant.
Only 3 people in the world have survive to this illness whithout the separation of their legs.
After lots of problems, Siloh died at the age of 10 because of a pneumonia.
Here you have the full documentary about the last six months of this girl, Siloh.
