Síndrome de la mano ajena / Alien hand syndrome

El Síndrome de la mano ajena consiste en que una de las dos manos parece adquirir vida propia, es decir, la persona no tiene control sobre los movimientos de dicha mano. Por ejemplo, la persona puede estar abrochándose una camisa y la mano "ajena" desabrochándola sin que la persona lo quiera. En general, no se es consciente de lo que dicha mano está haciendo hasta que se ve.
Se cree que esta enfermedad puede estar causada por una desconexión entre ambas partes del cerebro con control sobre el cuerpo. Como resultado, cada parte del cerebro puede controlar los movimientos del cuerpo sin que las otras partes del cerebro sean conscientes de ello.
Este síndrome es bastante más frecuente en personas en las que se ha llevado a cabo una cirugía para separar ambos hemisferios del cerebro. Este procedimiento, se llama Comisurotomía y generalmente se utiliza en casos extremos de epilepsia para relajar los síntomas. También puede ocurrir por neurocirugías, infecciones o golpes en los que se ve afectado el cerebro.

Alien hand syndrome consists in one of the hands moving by itself. This means that the person doesn't have control over the hand. For example they can be using one hand to button a shirt and the "alien" hand just goes unbottoning it. Generally people suffering this aren't conscious of what the hand is doing until they see it.
Its believed that this illness could be caused by a disconecction between both parts of the brain with control over the body. As a result, each part of the brain can control body movements without the other parts of the brain being conscious of it.
This syndrome is more frequent in people which have gone through surgeries for separating both hemispheres of the brain. This surgery is called Commissurotomy and its generally used in extreme cases of epilepsy to control the symptoms. It can also occur because of neurosurgeries, infections or damage to the brain because of a blow.
